Snow Place Like Home

or United Sucks at The Dick

The new look West Ham Colorado Rapids opened their new stadium today by beating D.C. United 2-1 in front of 125 fans. (Note to Dave O’Brien: they may have sold all the tickets to the match, but there were many empty seats.)

I must panic! D.C. has only won one of its last four games!

I’m sure there is much fear and loathing on BigSoccer/WaPo discussion pages about United’s poor performance, but I don’t see a need to panic. United was beat by a very motivated and well coached team in a special home opener game. Also, United haven’t won in Colorado since May 6, 2000. Finally, Black-and-Red are historically slow starters. Including today’s match, they have only won 4 of 12 of their MLS season opening games.

United looked like a team that hadn’t been home in many weeks. They make many mental errors and didn’t protect the ball – poor possession, easy give aways, sloppy passing – just like how Real Salt Lake runs its franchise!

The Cross, Resurrected on Easter Weekend

I’m not religious, but I know this is an important weekend to some. So, when Yinka Casal’s found Emilio’s head with his cross, I about fell out of my chair. It was a miracle! I thought United had abandoned all crosses in favor of dribbling into defenders and hoping for the best.

I believe United’s problems are not with its defense. It’s lack of effective outside midfielder play is hurting the team on both ends of the field.

Rating

2 out of 5 Jack Frosts (starring Michael Keaton) because the game and weather reminded me of that crappy movie.
