Should Ian Plenderleith Be Interesting?

We read him so you don’t have to.

questions1.gifIan Plenderleith asked today, “Should Bobby Boswell Be More Boring?” More? Bobby isn’t boring now. How can he be “more boring?” Did you mean to compare him to you, Ian? He could never be more boring than you. Bobby sitting still and reading your boring-ass column is still more exciting than you.

Ian’s rhetorical question is meant for us to conclude that elite footballers need to be focused on “extra laps instead of laptops.” However he is not specific about which laptop incident made Bobby lose his spot in the DC United line-up. (Bobby may have had some incidents in his lap, but they didn’t involve a computer! KnowwhatIamsayin‘?)

He also suggests Bobby wasn’t focused enough by asking “shouldn’t [European caliber players] be all devoted, steely-eyed?” I dunno, Ian. Soccer Jesus Beckham is pretty good and Gertrude says his eyes aren’t steely, they’re dreamy.

Ian correctly asserts that BobbyBoswell.com was “not launched with the club’s official backing.” But I’ve met with Will Chang and can confirm he loves the site and blogging by players. I’ve also met DC United front office staff and can confirm they would NEVER continue a project that hurts a player’s performance.

Next week I expect Ian to ask “Should Brian Carroll Be More Vocal?” and then burn 600 words on how you can’t be boring and quiet to get a contract in Europe. You need to be full of passion and have a love for life and the game.

Here is The Word about BobbyBoswell.com:

  • The Management and I did all of the technical stuff. Bobby only had to send an e-mail to The Management to create a post. We did the rest. For videos, Bobby just had to stand in front of the camera and talk.
  • Bobby had lots of good ideas. But he wasn’t obsessed with the site. There have been 211 posts so far. Bobby authored only 68 (32%) of those posts.
  • Bobby never pushed an agenda for the site. They way I heard it, The Management approached Bobby about the blog. Bobby is only guilty of being an accommodating player.
  • Remember that video of Esky as an intern at DC United? That was all The Management, and DC United’s video editor, and me pitching ideas. That doesn’t have anything to do with my argument – I just wanted to brag.

Feel free to ask questions if you remain skeptical about BobbyBoswell.com.

Comments:

Wow. And I thought my grandmother was bitter. You take it to a new height. Despite your objections and facts about bobby’s site, the criticism is valid in that the guy was Defender of the year, then was half of the time on the bench and making a lot of mistakes. The highly visible website made the idea of it being a distraction all the more obvious. Hoepfully he’ll rebound in Houston, but the question of why he slumped so much is still valid.
As far as your own contribution, you often do good work. Hopefully you’ll become as much of a destination for DC fans as Ian, but I’d be surprised if you can be as creative an entertaining as he is on a daily basis. Who knows, maybe bitterness can be turned into something sweet.

I didn’t say Ian couldn’t question Bobby’s drop in performance. I made fun of his poor argument and his use of a comparative in the headline. What he should have asked was, “Should Bobby Boswell become boring?”

I’ve never considered posting daily or being a destination for DC United fans. (Researchers in New Haven is my main demographic it seems.) This stupid website is for shits and giggles.

I wish Ian the best. That 12/17 post about the quality of the EPL is ground breaking insight . . .
