Brian’s Song
We are former West Springfield Spartans here at the Far Post, so we teared-up a little when Brian Carroll cracked a goal from distance in the 3-2 win over the yellow submarine boys from Columbus.
Lefty hasn’t cried since she watched the end of Brian’s Song (you know the part where Lando Calrissian gives that speech about Piccolo) – so emotional! It seems like just yesterday we were watching young Brian blasting his shots into the stands, but now he’s a goal-scoring machine!
United began the game with the same attacking flourishes they displayed against Celtic. DC continually created scoring chances, while the Crew chased play. Christian Gomez cleaned up Ben Olsen’s deflected shot for the first goal. An odd bounce allowed Kei Kamara (pronounced Hey Come-Here-Will-Ya!) to poach an equalizer before the half.
DC made Columbus chase the ball for most of the game, but had trouble keeping its defensive shape at the end. Brian Carroll scored on what any NBA fan would call “a prayer†shot. While Olsen finished a neat zig-zag run with one his trademark twist-a-Ben flicks of the foot. Near the end, an exhausted Adu struggled to keep former Terp Marc Burch’s 6’-2†frame away from the ball while an equally gassed Christian Gomez jogged around the National’s infield. In the end, Peter Nowak used his final sub for Freddy to sure up the right side of the midfield and DC hung on to win.
Rating: Five Spartans (out of five) for a cool game on a hot, ugly day.
