Sleepless in Seattle
or . . . soccer in the land of Star-Becks
I had to take eight naps to stay up for the DC United game versus Real Madrid (Gertrude says there isn’t a Fake Madrid and that I’m pronouncing in wrong . . . whatever). Normally, I only stay up past 8:30 p.m. ET when the Hallmark channel runs its Matlock marathon. (Sadly, some parts of my body NEVER stay up anymore.)
Watching my underpaid and underappreciated boys in Black-and-Red attack the Galacticos was the most fun I’ve had watching a soccer game all year. Sure, Real Madrid was the better team, but DC United gave them a perfect tune-up match and, thus, helped elevate the league’s standing. Also, I extend a warm thank you to the crowd in Seattle for cheering DC United’s effort and goal. We are all Washingtonians.
The Washington Post reports:
Real will receive an estimated $1 million. United will get approximately $100,000, most of which will go toward travel and hotel costs and arranging live TV coverage. With a victory or tie, United players will earn unspecified bonuses from the league.
Possible “unspecified” bonuses for United players:
- NASCAR DVDS for Faundo Erpen so he can learn how to make a pass.
- A trapping license from the VA Department of Game & Inland Fisheries for Alecko.
- A framed replica of Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze’s “Washington Crossing the Delaware†for Josh Gros so he can learn what a proper crossing looks like.
- NRA Shooting/Marksmanship Lessons for Freddy and Jamie.
- A plane ticket to New York for Peter Novak to meet with Sunil Gulati.
Rating: 5 (out of 5) Victoria Beckhams for a beautiful night of soccer.

The MLS “Rapâ€
Santino Quaranta is always a surprise. Maybe he’ll get hurt, maybe he won’t. Maybe he’ll show up for practice, maybe he won’t. Maybe he’ll score a goal and win the game in his first game . . . actually he is consistent about that! Good luck ‘Tino!
