Watch out! It’s the 5-0!

championsCup.gifAn increasingly confident DC United beat Harbour View FC tonight 5 – 0 (6 –1 aggregate) at RFK to advance to the semifinal series of the CONCough-cough-AF Champions’ Cup.

Harbour View bunkered down in the first half hoping to hold off United’s attack and surprise the Blank-and-Red with a counterattack. But a first half goal by Devon “Goal Machine” McTavish forced HVFC to open up play in the second half. The open field suited United well and they poured on four goals in the second half – another by McTavish, two by Emilio, and one from Fred.

The field looked great from my seats, but it seemed to be playing slow and causing lots of problems for players trying to cut the ball or provide a properly weighted pass. Was the grass too long? Too dry? Just being a jerk? (Grass is funny that way, it will just be a jerk sometimes.)

United awaits the winner of the Pachuca – CD Motagua match-up. Thankfully neither of those teams are Chivas.

Extras

Barra Brava and Screaming Eagles were in mid-season form. They were in full voice the entire game and had the usual accoutrements: flags, smoke bombs, and beer! You guys sounded great!

The Aramark/RFK concessions staff was in pre-season form. How do you run out of pretzels by the first half? Also, I didn’t see a single vendor roaming the isles. (Maybe they don’t work international competitions?)

Back in Black!

I’ve always been a Santino Quaranta fan and was happy to see him enter the game in the 64th minute. He was active and had some good touches. He missed a break away chance, but so did Emilio and Fred . . . so you can’t be too hard on him. Good on ya’, hon!

Rating

5 out of 5 goals!
