The U20s Love The Post!
or . . . Woodworking 101
No. Not our Post. The goal post.
The Under-20 Men’s National Team began the final stretch of its qualifying for the U-20 World Cup with a convincing 4-1 blowout of Haiti. Andre Akpan hit more wood than Paul Bunyan, but still managed to net three goals.
All fro
After making Haiti chase and scramble for the first quarter-hour, the US finally slotted home a goal after Anthony Wallace looped a cross that Andre Akpan was near before it went into the net.
The incomparable Ray Hudson joked that Akpan’s header was “all fro.†But, the replay on our deluxe, RCA Victor Television Receiver made it looked like the ball sorta glanced off of Akpan’s back. Whatever happened, the ball eventually rolled into the net and started the US’ goal landslide.
â€A nice slice of this cakeâ€
— Ray Hudson
Yeah, we don’t know either. But around the 35th minute Ray decided the US’ performance was so inspiring they had earned “a nice slice of this cake.â€
Our Favorite Moment
Just before the second-half restart the cameras caught Freddy at the center circle singing a little hip-hop to Anthony Wallace. It must be nice for him to be around guys his age and to shed – momentarily – the pressures and awkwardness of being the kid on a team. Keep smiling’ and rhymin’, Freddy!
