Canada’s (and USA’s) Goalkeeper of the Year …

is Haitian!

Everyone, this is Johnny Placide:

Despite allowing 5 goals in tonight’s game, he is the most important player in CONCACAF Olympic group play. His saves against a ragging U23 Mexico side allowed Canada to advance to the semifinals by keeping Mexico’s goal differential at +3. (Canada’s goal differential as +4).

Placide didn’t have any help either. While Haiti punched in a goal, they also lost two players to Red Cards. Jean Paulin and Judelini Avesta were the ejected and both were astonishingly useless: Avesta started and was ejected after only 28 minutes and Paulin came on as a sub and only lasted 20 minutes. Without Placide, Haiti might have lost by eight goals and Mexico would have advanced.

The US will play Canada in Tennessee on Thursday night, while Mexico will begin a search for a new coach.
