Day 7 - He’s a keeper!
I didn’t know Euro 2008 games had promotional nights, but it turns out they do! Today was clearly Goalkeeper Day in Zurich, Switzerland. Gianluigi Buffon will be remembered for his brilliant save of a PK. But his rival, Bogdan Lobont, was equally as important in the game. Both ‘keepers made wonderful saves to keep their teams in the game.
Luck of the . . . Orange?
For our money, the Netherlands is the luckiest team in the tournament. For the second game in a row, a controversial call helped their effort. Against Italy it was the odd β but apparently technically correct β call that kept Ruud van Nistelrooy onside. Today the Oranje received the benefit of a handball non-call (we think wrong-call) on a Thierry Henry shot in the 52 minute. The problem for the rest of the teams in the tournament is that the Netherlands is both lucky and good!. The 7 goals they have scored so far have been brilliant displays of football.
Best Game
Netherlands β France. Great players. Great play. Gutsy effort by France to stay in the game only to be gutted by Arjen Robben’s goalazio. (That goal wasn’t as good as Marcel van Basten’s winner in 1988, but I suspect Holland’s coach still approved.) I’m suspicious of Netherland’s defense, but they will be dangerous in the quarterfinals . . .

The Final Whistle
“Well itβs a Dutch oven!
And the French are toast!”

Rating for the Day
5 out of 5 Auguste Piccards. 7 goals (again!) and plenty of bright play from some of the best players in the world.
